What Happened to SportNation Bet

The end was announced on the site itself rather than leaked through the trade press. A closure FAQ page went up in November 2022 opening with the line that after careful deliberation SportNation would cease trading as a UK sportsbook and online casino from the end of November 2022. The reason given was the economics of running a small igaming business in the British market.

The wind down was set out in unusual detail. Bets due to settle after 30 November were voided and stakes returned, unused free bets, bonus funds and rewards points were forfeited on the same date, and accounts stayed open in withdrawal only mode until the final closing date of 7 December 2022. Balances above one pound were then refunded automatically, and the company said it would keep meeting refund requests after 14 December to the extent the law required. The corporate background matters because it explains why the whole group vanished at once. Argyll Entertainment AG had been bought by Esports Entertainment Group in the summer of 2020, and it was that parent which chose to pull the licence rather than simply retire one brand. While it traded, the footer of every page carried the same statement, that www.sportnation.bet is owned and operated by Argyll Entertainment AG, licensed and regulated in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission under account number 45143. The group brand RedZone Sports published the licence in full as 000-045143-r-323955-001. The licence was genuine while the business traded, but it was surrendered in December 2022 and no longer provides an active complaint or account route.

The responsible gambling tooling was reasonable for a site of that size. Players could set account limits, take a time out, self exclude, close the account or block just the casino or just the sportsbook through a product blocking request, with a forty eight hour lead time to apply it and a seven day cooling off period to lift it. Argyll Entertainment AG was declared bankrupt in Switzerland on 27 March 2023. The Gambling Commission can record information about a former licensee but does not recover individual gambling debts, and SportNation’s IBAS arrangement ended with the closure.
